How to Identify Popular Hashtags

Hashtags are a terrific way to group related posts and conversations together on social media channels. For example, you might be at a conference, and there is a hashtag for the conference. You can filter out the conversation to engage with people at the conference, promote your brand/products/services using the hashtag and more.

Hashtags are used on social channels and are important in your business – you may be missing a trick if you are not using them.

When you use relevant hashtags (#) on your social media posts, people who are searching for those keywords can find your tweets and updates and can potentially follow you or reach out to you. Unfortunately, if you use the wrong hashtags, you will not get the additional exposure you want, and your marketing will not be as interesting.

Hashtags are very popular on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, and Google+. Instagram is where hashtags are used the most, so it is advisable to never share Instagram posts without some hashtags. On Twitter, however, use no more than two hashtags for any tweet, and try not to use general hashtags like #sports.

The following tools/tips should help you to identify popular hashtags, but it is important to mention that the most popular hashtags are not always the best ones to use because there are so many people sharing content using that hashtag. It is easy for content to get lost in the rush when there is an overwhelming number of posts. So, do not always pick the number one hashtag on the list.

  • Find out what influencers are using: There are many tools you can use to figure out which hashtag influencers in your niche are using. One such tool is Twitonomy, and it will provide you with a list of top 10 hashtags of any Twitter user. Simply type in the Twitter handle of any leader in your industry and see which hashtags they have found effective with their audience.

  • Find trending hashtags in your niche: As part of your social media strategy, you will want to identify which topics are trending in your industry. A great tool for this is Hashtagify.me, as it shows you the top 10 hashtags related to a keyword. Simply put the keyword into the search box, and a list of trending hashtags relating to it would appear.

  • Use tailored trends: Introduced back in 2012, tailored trends give you a list of topics and hashtags based both on your location and on whom you follow on Twitter. While it only provides a very limited list of topics at any given point, it can be helpful to keep an eye on trending topics of interest to your followers.

  • Brainstorm: The above tools are all great, but do not forget that you are the expert when it comes to your niche and audience. Before you jump in and try out the tools above, take some time to sit down and brainstorm which keywords would be of interest to your audience. Once you come up with a list, use the tools above to find related hashtags and to see how popular they really are.

Hashtags can be quite useful to get that extra reach and attention and to find opportunities to engage. If you use them well, it can be very beneficial to your personal brand and/or business.
